Moonside and Baby Monitor 3G, compared honestly
Baby Monitor 3G is the best-known baby monitor app and a good product. If you are choosing between the two, here is what is actually different, with the prices we could verify and where we looked them up.
The short version. Baby Monitor 3G has video and costs €7.99 per platform, so a pair of an iPhone and an Android phone needs two purchases, €15.98. Moonside is audio only and charges the Parent phone once, €5.99; the Baby phone is free on every platform, so the same mixed pair costs €5.99. If you want to see the cot, Baby Monitor 3G is the better fit. If you want to hear the room without a camera, an account or a subscription, that is what Moonside is for.
| Moonside | Baby Monitor 3G | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Audio only, on purpose: live sound, a level meter, alerts. | Video and audio. |
| Price model | Free Baby phone. Parent phone free for 3 days after pairing, then one payment on that phone. No subscription. | Paid app, one-time purchase per platform: €7.99 on the App Store (Netherlands), €7.99 on Google Play, $7.99 on the US App Store, €5.99 on the Mac App Store. |
| iPhone in the nursery, Android with you (or the reverse) | One purchase: €5.99. | Two purchases, one per platform: €15.98 at the prices above. The maker's support page confirms that each platform is licensed separately, with sharing only within the same platform's family sharing. |
| Same platform on both phones | €5.99 once, on the Parent phone. | €7.99 once, shared across devices on the same store account or family group. |
| Pairing iPhone with Android | Yes, any combination of iPhone, iPad and Android. | Yes: the maker's support page says Android pairs with iPhone, iPad and Mac. |
| Account | None. No sign-up, no email, no password. | Not compared: we have not verified how Baby Monitor 3G handles accounts, and will not guess. |
| Encryption and what the servers see | Live audio end-to-end encrypted between your phones; our servers never store audio and write no phone's address to a log. Details | Not compared: we have not verified Baby Monitor 3G's architecture and do not make claims about it. |
| When the connection drops | The Parent phone sounds an alarm after about 30 seconds without a sign from the Baby phone, then reconnects by itself. | Not compared. |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Android. Apple Watch app for status. Nothing for Mac or TV. | iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac; Apple TV is listed on the App Store. |
Where Baby Monitor 3G is the better choice
- You want video. Moonside has none and will not pretend a level meter is the same thing.
- You want a Mac or Apple TV as the Parent device.
- You have used it for years and it works for you. A baby monitor you trust is worth more than two euros.
Where Moonside is the better choice
- You have an iPhone and an Android phone and would rather pay once than twice.
- You would rather not have a camera in your child's room, or a video feed to keep checking.
- You want no account, and a service that cannot listen to your nursery even if it wanted to.
- You want to be told when the monitor has lost the room, loudly, instead of finding out in the morning.
